Coffee 101
Learn more about the art of coffee roasting from our own Brad Bason, in this feature from WNEP.
Coffee beans are grown all throughout planet earth near the equator. However, Hawaii is the only place in the US where coffee is grown, producing some of the most sought-after coffee in the world.
Coffee is thought to have started in Ethiopia after a goat herder named Kaldi noticed how his goats danced around after eating the colorful red fruit from a certain bush. Kaldi took some of this cherry-sized fruit to a local Islamic holy man that disapproved it's use and quickly threw the fruit in the fire. As the seeds of the fruit were being roasted in the fire, the aroma was very enticing. They were raked out of the fire, ground up and then the first cup of coffee was enjoyed.
Green (unroasted) coffee can keep for up to a year. Once it is roasted, it will start going stale after only two weeks. Once you grind it, coffee will start going stale in about two days. Fresh roasted coffee will hit its peak of taste 24 to 48 hours after it has been roasted. We roast in small batches so that when you place your order you receive the freshest coffee possible. To keep coffee fresh, the best thing to do is to just keep oxygen away from it in an air tight container.
The number one traded commodity in the world is………oil. Number two is, yup, you guessed it, coffee.
There are two basic kinds of coffee, Arabica and Robusta. Arabica is a better grade of coffee and grown at higher altitude. Robusta is a lower grade and grown at lower altitude. At Bason Coffee Roasting, we will only sell Arabica coffee unless you specifically ask for Robusta. Robusta coffee is also a hardier bean that is resistant to coffee leaf rust.
Beans (we call them coffee beans but it is more of a seed that is found inside the coffee cherry), are grown in over 70 countries mainly in South America, Central America, Indonesia, Asia and Africa. Coffee is grown in mountain areas and 80% of the coffee grown is done on small farms that are eight acres or smaller in size.
Bason Coffee Roasting is here to help you discover and enjoy the outstanding flavor of fresh roasted coffee.
